[Churchianity] Focus on Issues

Posted by Lex Fear on June 24, 2007

5 Issues the church is too concerned about

CULTURE VULTURE: The Environment. Sure we should be smart and not drop litter, we should do what we can to reduce our individual waste… but this is one of the latest examples of the church jumping on a cultural bandwagon rather than seeking to make a difference in peoples lives. Plus, if more people did their research, they might discover that there’s not much we can do about global warming, it may even be part of God’s design for the planet. Have you noticed how nature is always moving and shifting through various seasons? It’s is only human beings who want to stay in place, prevent change and establish foundations. Not that, that is bad, but we should realise nature does not ask our permission before it changes.

BIBLE BASHING: Gay Rights. Of course, as a Christian if I was to have sex with man, I would be committing a sin. However this would also be the case if I had sex with a prostitute. And being a married Christian, if I was to have sex with another woman other than my wife, I would also be committing a sin. Why does the church focus on one sexual sin when protesting moral decline? How many Christians are divorced and remarried? Aah but there’s extenuating circumstances… violent spouses etc… we should be sensitive and understanding. Then likewise, we should be sensitive and understanding to homosexuals. It should also be noted that where God is concerned, it is only the church that should be subject to this kind of moral law. But the predominant question is this: Why shouldn’t homosexuals be free from prejudice?

[Trollfeed] No Comment

Posted by Lex Fear on June 9, 2007

Well, I guess when you post anything slighty critical of Rachel North, you can expect at some point for a member of the Northsquad to show up. I did always say they were welcome but I’m getting pretty tired of the relentlessness of one Anonymous commenter.

Despite claims, I haven’t seen a large boost in traffic coming from Oxford. Oh well, guess I won’t be picking up one of these anytime soon.

Stats… stats… preeeccciiioouus staaats!

I can’t stand comment moderation, I never thought I would have to use it, but after this comment:

“I can see what you are putting forward and it looks to me like an attack on a blogger to get publicity for your own blog by being ‘controversial and doing a bit of victim-blaming. Perhaps you do not care to talk to readers. Perhaps you do not care about your reputation. R clearly does and fair play to her.”

Anything involving Rachel North seems to get serious pretty quickly, so I’m taking steps to ensure this doesn’t escalate.

I seem to have suffered a bit of a comment explosion, at the moment. I may have taken on too many battles at once. I think this blog needs to cool down a bit so I’m going to be posting light humour for a while before I resume Fallible Design, Housing Market Myths and other subjects.

Regular readers, feel free to dribble away till my stats are near death. Alex Fear needs a rest before once again taking up arms against the Philistine hordes.

Moderation will be removed as soon as stupidity levels are reasonably lower.

[PR Exercise] Gordon Brown And The Kiddies

Posted by Lex Fear on May 11, 2007

Just checked out Gordon Brown‘s campaign website, prepared in advance (against the rules) by Silverfish.

Wow, amazing what can be achieved with Photoshop these days, I prefer The Gimp but each to his own…

Just for your ease, I have added 3 red spots to the image to point out areas they messed up.

In no particular order (you need to be able to zoom on the image):

a) Girls hand next to Gordons head, looks like it was just a straight cut or slightly botched placement next to the girls hair.
b) Kids face on Gordon’s left shoulder. A trick I learned from a TV program, compare the light reflection (white dots) to the kid on Gordon’s right shoulder, the reflection is not in the same area of the pupil, not only that, there, many other kids are lacking white dots in their eyes- which means they were not in the same place or photo.
c) Also look at the light reflections of clothing, skin, looks like the sun was only shining selectively this day.
d) Bottom of the image. Why is almost every kid in this picture looking in a different direction? Lousy photographer or cut-n-paste. You decide…

[Iranian Guests] Captive Audience

Posted by Lex Fear on April 10, 2007

I haven’t said anything on the 15 British sailors who were taken captive by Iran. It’s pretty obvious it was a sick publicity stunt in order to goad the US and UK governments.

Ahmadinejad has to know that Bliar is on his way out and holds little sway with the British public or even elements of his own party. It is hardly likely such a dubious case as made for the Iraq war could be made for Iran now without solid reasons.

Regardless, it must be a harrowing experience to be taken captive as many former innocent Guantanamo Bay captives will tell you.

But the most striking element of this media circus is how Iran has unwittingly or otherwise, proved that there is no need to use torture to extract the confessions you want- at least not when it comes to British soldier-sailors.

I had respect for them when they refused BA’s complimentary champagne and for changing back into uniform once safely on the plane. Unfortunately they began to lose this respect as the truth emerged that they offered zero resistance to the Iranian authorities, going the extra mile for the Iranian propaganda machine and making money (with the exception of Captain Chris Air) from the experience when others who have gone through much worse situations have not.

Which is why I find Inspector Gadgets opinion the most common sense and on-the-money, that I have read so far.

[Churchianity] Name Dropping

Posted by Lex Fear on March 14, 2007

“Prime Minister John Howard recently recognised the Church’s achievements by opening its new childcare facilities, financed with the help of a U.C.I.S loan.” – UCIS Flyer

“MANY Australians will question the priority of churches which have posted signs saying “Jesus loves Osama”, Prime Minister John Howard says.” – Herald Sun

“I just sat there the whole night with my mouth hanging open. To even have the prime minister John Howard want to go to Edge Church just because he wanted to visit – thats huge!” – AnnaTsang

“PRIME Minister John Howard attended an intimate fundraising lunch with a violent Brisbane pornographer, who was facing charges of torture and grievous bodily harm at the time, in the lead-up to the 2004 federal election.” – News.com.au

In October 19, the Assemblies of God NOW magazine headlined its lead story “Deputy P.M. puts Jesus first”. Assistant editor and writer for the magazine, Paul Gallagher, had obtained an exclusive interview with John Anderson on a subject that went deeper than his public office “his personal faith in God… …Prime Minister John Howard officially launched the book in August 2006, declaring to a room full of politicians and media, “I am delighted this book has been written.” – AOG Now Magazine

“Mr Howard said al-Qaeda should be “praying as many times as possible” for an Obama victory in the 2008 elections.” – BBC News

“The Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. John Howard, officially opened the new 3,500 seat Hillsong Church Convention Centre in Sydney’s north-west on Saturday, 19 October 2002.” – AOG Now Magazine

“Back then, of course, he talked a lot about Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction; that does not make compelling reading today. Worse, back then Howard said not a word about what would happen after Saddam was gone. Back then he was saying Australian troops would be home in a few months.” – The Age

My dear friends, don’t let public opinion influence how you live out our glorious, Christ-originated faith. If a man enters your church wearing an expensive suit, and a street person wearing rags comes in right after him, and you say to the man in the suit, “Sit here, sir; this is the best seat in the house!” and either ignore the street person or say, “Better sit here in the back row,” haven’t you segregated God’s children and proved that you are judges who can’t be trusted?James, The Message Bible

[‘Accidents’ Happen] Propaganda Still A Threat To The UK

Posted by Lex Fear on December 23, 2006

“I thought it was only the mafia that referred to killing people as “accidents”…”

Sorry, but I just couldn’t let this one go…

Met Chief’s Terror Plot Warning

I really am fed up with the kind bull that Sir Ian Blair spews. The latest article by the BBC says it all:

“Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair claims the UK is facing an unparalleled and growing threat of a terrorist attack.

However, he said there was “no specific intelligence” about an imminent attack but the threat was “ever present”.” – BBC News (cont.)

Is it just me that questions the logic of that statement? There is “no specific intelligence” but the threat is “ever present”. Does this sound a little Orwellian to you? It should. Either there must be specific intelligence, or there is no threat, you can’t just say that it’s ever present. It’s like saying there is a threat of a meteor crashing into earth- there are small bits of meteors crashing all the time. As for a large one, yes it could happen, but we don’t go around warning each other everyday or living under the cloud of the threat.

“Sir Ian also said he was “confident” of being cleared of misconduct over the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes.

And he defended an anti-terror raid in Forest Gate, claiming the shooting of a man during the raid was an accident.” (cont.)

I thought it was only the mafia that referred to killing people as “accidents”. As far as accidents go, I hope I don’t end up a police “accident” as I’m running for the tube one day (yet another reason not to use the tube).

I don’t know about you but I am just not comfortable with that term “accident”. It makes it sound like something less significant. Let’s not forget, a man lost his life here, an innocent man who happened to be of the wrong skin tone.

I’m sure if Mr De Menzes by some miracle had survived 6 shots fired into his forehead at point blank range, he would have a different take on the incident.

The commissioner criticised the length of the inquiry, adding: “It’s difficult to understand how an organisation can take 13 months to investigate what I did or did not say on one particular day.”

I must congratulate the commissioner on a clever and great example of deflecting responsibility. Why else would an organisation take 13 months to investigate what you said? There’s a PR tactic that you may have heard of, it’s call disinformation. The only reason there could be any difficulty in establishing facts is differing accounts. The delay, commissioner, is with you and the Met.
