[Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes] Teething Problems

Posted by Lex Fear on February 1, 2009

So I had to go pick a theme that doesn’t show the post author, and since we now have two authors on the books I’ve had to do theme change.

Why am I not using a customised theme instead you ask? Because underneath this domain it’s ‘just another WordPress blog’ which has limited theme choice, and this is because I’m being a cheapskate.

The other issue I have is loss of comments. I’ve been doing some housekeeping and updating my older content and noticed that I have lost the comments for all my posts which originally started on blogger. I apologise to longtime followers from the early days, I have no way of now getting these back (without painstaking recreation of each one from the old content).

Ce la vie.

The Future

Posted by Lex Fear on January 17, 2009

A belated Happy New Year to all my readers who I can now count on two hands. It seems odd to be posting after such a while, I’ve been taking some time out as well as harassing other bloggers by over-using their comment feature.

Firstly, I’ve had some emails recently so I want to let those who have emailed know that I’ll get round to responding to you soon.

This post is about the future, the future of this blog specifically.

I think about the future a lot. I think about the current state of cultures and societies, scientific consensus, and what will those who come after us will say about this time. People who ascribe to old values, or belief systems that are considered a throwback to medieval times are mocked and villified. I see no reason that some of the accepted theories and philosophies of the day will be also be derided and mocked in the future. I wonder how many times a ‘new paradigm’ will be declared only to be shot down in flames when the next paradigm comes along.

I don’t think many bloggers or forum posters think like this. I say so because I’ve read their posts.

I like the idea that my words will be here for future generations to read and observe ideas were around at the beginning of the 21st Century. I like that people will be able to marvel at how insightful and forward thinking I was… or how spectacularly wrong I got it.

But on to the future of this blog. I have some interesting developments which should please people who consider Alex Fear to write things worth reading.

I have been advised by my site hosts, Lycos, that they are feeling very credit crunchy indeed and so are selling the web-hosting business. Some time in February in fact, this site will cease to exist… unless I transfer.

But I’m not transferring.

This website remains due to my ability to fund it. Apart from a small amount I’ve received from advertising, it’s funded by my own pocket. Whilst I like the idea of having my own base, as it were, something has always troubled me about this – what if something happened? What if I got struck by a bus and the funding no longer continued?

Though I wasn’t ready to contemplate a move, it seems my hosts have forced it upon me, therefore I’m going to be migrating this blog – to a WordPress hosted one. It’s not my first preference, I’d rather go back to Blogger, but WordPress hosting is the only way I get to keep all the comments and settings from this one, for now.

I’ll be migrating shortly, and I’ll be removing content from this site and putting on redirect. I may look and see if it’s possible for me to keep the domain name, without hosting- but admittedly and embarrassingly I’m not definite of how this works.

There is more news to come, which I’ll follow up with soon.

[Blogger] That Was Odd…

Posted by Lex Fear on May 25, 2007

This Post Is Rated: F for Friendly. Reflections on lost blogs.

In my last post I mentioned my other blog Dark Side of the Light in purgatory (see comments).

I just checked tonight and darksidelight.blogspot.com was available again, along with abandonallfear.blogspot.com.

Of course I reclaimed! Particularly since the folks at Dead Yet Living failed to update their link since it was lost.

[Me Against The World] Events Conspire

Posted by Lex Fear on September 21, 2006

Only just got over the Blogger Beta disaster… and I have now lost my broadband connection at home! This is due to the fact I ordered TalkTalk free broadband 2 months ago and they have only just got round to connecting.

They’ve booked me in to go live on October the 2nd, but my current provider pulled the plug yesterday. It’s not even worth my while subscribing to a hotspot- it would cancel out the benefit of the free broadband. So I am now consigned to using a mixture of the wireless network at work (which means staying at my desk late) or using a dial-up connection at home.

It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the fact I’m only going to enjoy the new wireless connection for a week and a half till I leave for Hawaii. Then I have to start all over again with another broadband provider in November.

I will try to blog, but it won’t be as regular now, and I don’t think I will be able to resume a more regular blogging pattern till mid November at the earliest.

Storm clouds are gathering… I am hoping to find a way out of this £45 parking fine I have been fighting for the last 5 months (where I will get £45 now I don’t know so I am only able to continue dialogue now with the courts), I’m hoping it gets to 6 months so it will time out- providing the courts see it that way (the issue has already been brought to them once and sent back to the police). Part of the difficulty is that in less than a months time I will be away for a month- if they send a letter for court appearance during this time I won’t get it. This could get ugly.

I still have my outstanding tax bill, I have yet to be able to contact Inland Revenue and ask them to spread out the payment- if they will let me. Sure when I start the job I’ll be able to cover all this stuff but it seems like events conspire to head me off at the pass- try and bury me before I get to solid ground.

At least things are going in the right direction… marraige, new job, more money… eventually. What we are counting on right now is enough money to carry us through for the month I don’t get paid between jobs, finding accomodation in London and the last part of the wedding plans coming together.

I’ve been blessed, God has raised me out of some incredibly difficult situations, he will continue to do so. My resolve is only strengthened against earthly authorities and critics, since I answer to a higher power.

[Tragedy] Blogger Beta Ate My Blogs!

Posted by Lex Fear on September 6, 2006

It’s a true blogging horror story, it wasn’t pretty…

It was a late Saturday night and I had finished making final edits to my blog template, getting the colours and the new heading all lined up, tidying up the links and shameless advertising. Finally satisfied, one final click back to the Dashboard, where I spy a an option to upgrade to the new Beta.

Cautiously I clicked for more information and was sold on instantly on the labeling options and the exile of Blogger’s wheel of update- 0%… 0%… 20%… 65%… 96%… 100%.

Then I did something utterly stupid and out of character. I was tired, it was late, the little teccie voice inside my head was indeed blurbing “Wait a minute, shouldn’t you test this with a new blog?”, but instead I just wanted to get ahead and so I entered my googlemail address and my blogs entered the void… purgatory… the black hole of Beta.

After emailing Beta Tec support and subscribing to Google Groups I didn’t seem to get anywhere. But lo and behold, Google truly giveth and Google taketh away… Google cache!

Basically my blogs – “abandonallfear.blogspot.com” and “darksidelight.blogspot.com” are gone and I don’t know when or even if they will be back. However, I was able to rescue almost my entire post archives through the glory of Google Cache.

If you’re having the same problem just google “cache:yourblog.yourbloghost.com”.

Since I was considering the merits of moving my blogs to my own Lycos-hosted server, blogger had merely forced my hand and so here it is. With my downloaded cache of old posts I shall soon be restoring and editing them to this blog, with the care and precision of someone restoring the Sistine Chapel.

For the time being, be prepared for this blog to look a little like someone who has come out of a major liposuction operation. Everything is there, it just needs a little nip and tuck.

My recreated blogs can now be found at http://www.abandonallfear.co.uk/blog and http://www.abandonallfear.co.uk/darksidelight/ Don’t forget to update your links!
