[Visas] Real Costs Of Immigration?

Posted by Lex Fear on May 14, 2007

For any Daily Mail readers who may happen across this blog, I would like to advise that my wife is an immigrant to the UK. We paid a total of approximately £500 for our marriage visa+application, she pays a higher rate of tax and has no rights to claim any benefits for the first 5(?) years.

If local councils are concerned about the cost of immigration, may I advise them to take it up with the treasury and the home office, who may be able to help with some of the funding.

[Bisexuality] Bigamy With A Twist

Posted by Lex Fear on April 3, 2007

From BBC News:
Lesbian on ceremony bigamy charge

A woman has appeared in court accused of going through a civil partnership ceremony with her lesbian partner while still being married to a man.

Suzanne Mitchell, 29, of Wingfield Gardens, Shrewsbury, appeared before the town’s magistrates on Thursday.

The mother-of-three denied making a false statement to a registrar when she married Caroline Beddowes in a civil partnership ceremony last February.

The case was referred to the crown court and Mrs Mitchell was given bail.

I suspect I have lost all my readers but to anyone passing, thoughts?

[Bwankers] Account-ability Advice for Banks

Posted by Lex Fear on March 28, 2007

Most blogs we’re so busy discussing the budget last week they missed the BBC’s undercover whistleblower program exposing underhand standard business practices by Barclays Bank. (Barclays was the focus, just like McDonalds was with fast food. And just like Burger King to McDonalds, you can bank on the rest of the industry using the same business ethic).

“A nine-month investigation by BBC reporters working undercover in a leading British bank has revealed a culture of ruthlessness and lies which will shock their customers.” – BBC Whistleblower

Undercover reporter Amanda Egbujo went undercover as an employee of Barclays for 9 months. In that time she witnessed common practices such as:

  • Treating customers with contempt (particularly those who struggled paying/complained about unlawful charges)
  • Lying – illegally claiming to be Account Consultants rather than Sales Monkeys
  • Moving money from accounts – without authority – to gain commission
  • Adding financial products to customer accounts without knowledge- for a monthly charge
  • Refusing customers products they require, but then offering a financial product they do not need.
  • Staff employed with no criminal background checks
  • Fraud accounts set up with relative ease

I asserted this was not just Barclays, and I have my own experience with HSBC, when they decided to cancel my Graduate 0% Interest Overdraft (which stood over £1000), then reinstate the overdraft a year later at a standard 15% interest. This case is currently with the small claims court.

Indeed this week Halifax had to issue an apology for stolen mortgage details. Unlike average joe who has £20-£35 penalties automatically deducted at the end of the month for going over agreed limits, Halifax is given plenty of time to get their act together by the FSA.

I’ve said this before, it’s not legal, it’s not business, it’s immoral and indefensible.

As a Christian, I believe that these corrupt financial institutions will one day have to answer to God:

“If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has collapsed under its load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and help. In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.” – Exodus 23:5-6

“But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve. Like a partridge that hatches eggs she has not laid, so are those who get their wealth by unjust means. At midlife they will lose their riches; in the end, they will become poor old fools.” – Jeremiah 17:10-11

“How you hate honest judges! How you despise people who tell the truth! You trample the poor, stealing their grain through taxes and unfair rent. Therefore, though you build beautiful stone houses, you will never live in them. Though you plant lush vineyards, you will never drink wine from them. For I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions. You oppress good people by taking bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.” – Amos 5:10-12

[Bailiffs] Thieves Want More Power

Posted by Lex Fear on March 5, 2007

Read my previous post about bailiffs

A few months ago I blogged a news story from the BBC about unscrupulous bailiffs criminals and the lengths they will go to collect debts extort money from their victims.

Now read this

Now, who is going to be the first to do this?

[‘Accidents’ Happen] Propaganda Still A Threat To The UK

Posted by Lex Fear on December 23, 2006

“I thought it was only the mafia that referred to killing people as “accidents”…”

Sorry, but I just couldn’t let this one go…

Met Chief’s Terror Plot Warning

I really am fed up with the kind bull that Sir Ian Blair spews. The latest article by the BBC says it all:

“Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair claims the UK is facing an unparalleled and growing threat of a terrorist attack.

However, he said there was “no specific intelligence” about an imminent attack but the threat was “ever present”.” – BBC News (cont.)

Is it just me that questions the logic of that statement? There is “no specific intelligence” but the threat is “ever present”. Does this sound a little Orwellian to you? It should. Either there must be specific intelligence, or there is no threat, you can’t just say that it’s ever present. It’s like saying there is a threat of a meteor crashing into earth- there are small bits of meteors crashing all the time. As for a large one, yes it could happen, but we don’t go around warning each other everyday or living under the cloud of the threat.

“Sir Ian also said he was “confident” of being cleared of misconduct over the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes.

And he defended an anti-terror raid in Forest Gate, claiming the shooting of a man during the raid was an accident.” (cont.)

I thought it was only the mafia that referred to killing people as “accidents”. As far as accidents go, I hope I don’t end up a police “accident” as I’m running for the tube one day (yet another reason not to use the tube).

I don’t know about you but I am just not comfortable with that term “accident”. It makes it sound like something less significant. Let’s not forget, a man lost his life here, an innocent man who happened to be of the wrong skin tone.

I’m sure if Mr De Menzes by some miracle had survived 6 shots fired into his forehead at point blank range, he would have a different take on the incident.

The commissioner criticised the length of the inquiry, adding: “It’s difficult to understand how an organisation can take 13 months to investigate what I did or did not say on one particular day.”

I must congratulate the commissioner on a clever and great example of deflecting responsibility. Why else would an organisation take 13 months to investigate what you said? There’s a PR tactic that you may have heard of, it’s call disinformation. The only reason there could be any difficulty in establishing facts is differing accounts. The delay, commissioner, is with you and the Met.

[Rotten] Thick As Legal Thieves

Posted by Lex Fear on October 2, 2006

“There is something interesting about the power of money, and the blindness of the middle class to the plight of the poorest in society.”

I was saving this to write something more full-blown, but time seems to be speeding up to my impending trip. So here’s something short but should still have an impact on you.

The BBC recently conducted one of their undercover expose’s into the murky world of bailiffs. The results were as I expected, shocking but not surprising. Which begs the question, will the government ever do something about the abuse of power that goes on in this country?

[Infallibility] Ulterior Verse of the Day: Romans 3:22-24

Posted by Lex Fear on October 1, 2006

“We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in the Pope to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.

For everyone but the Pope have sinned; fallen short of the Popes’ infallibility. Yet now the Pope in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through the ex Cathedra, on this occasion..” – Romans 3:22-24 NLT

Is an apology a sign of admission of error? Depends on whether you are the Pope and you are speaking ex cathedra or not. Today’s Ulterior Verse of the Day was inspired by an article from BBC Magazine. So is the Pope infallible, and just how infallible is he?

It seems to me that you can be both infallible and fallible dualistically, depending on how many people or religious groups you offend.

Some people may question a dichotomy such as this but I can see the benefits of such a theology. I’ve been dying to tell 18-35’s Pastor how much his preaching sucks, and now I think I’ve found a way.

[Religious Peedom] Don’t Shit On Mecca

Posted by Lex Fear on August 23, 2006

I was sent this link to BBC News this morning:

“Facilities in a prison are being built so Muslim inmates do not have to face Mecca while sitting on the toilet…

“…Faith leaders had told prison bosses it was unacceptable for Muslim inmates to face Mecca while using the toilet…

…The refurbishment has been carried out with due consideration for all faiths”, a Home Office spokeswoman said…”

If you ask me this is just a waste of your “freedom of religious expression”. If it was me I’d be milking it for all I could get-

“Sorry, these bars are facing the wrong way to my spiritual homeland, please move them”
“My faith calls for me to do everything wearing no clothes for at least 5 hours a day”
“Allah gets offended if I don’t eat enough Ben & Jerry’s”
“My faith requires me to attend a cinema to pray at least twice a week”

Still, we have to give them credit for toilets, I don’t think anyone could top that idea! So is this asymmetrical warfare against plumbers or what?

There’s too many jokes in this and I’ve gone for the obvious, can you do any better? Leave a comment, that goes for all you lurkers…
