[Fallible Design] Questions I Was Never Taught To Ask

Posted by Lex Fear on June 30, 2007

This Post Is Rated: D for Duh! Warning. May cause you to seriously doubt the intelligence of the author.

Last month I posted the first in my Fallible Design series: How I Went From Intellectual to Dumb

Before I begin this second post I must issue a clarification on the subject of ‘evolution’. It appears to me there is a lot of ignorance and omission from both evolutionists and creationists when debating this subject. I include myself when I say ignorance but perhaps it is more lazy thinking.

The problem is that the whole ‘Evolution vs Creationism’ debate is framed wrong. When the term ‘evolution’ is used, it’s far too indefinite and absolute. Thus creationists (who believe God created the universe) easily fall into the trap of arguing against the whole theory and appearing quite stupid. Creationists should not be arguing against ‘evolution’. They should study it and argue on the specifics.

[Blasphemy] Blasphemically Challenged

Posted by Lex Fear on June 7, 2007

I’ve been meaning to blog about this one for a while since it appeared on BoingBoing

“It’s simple. You record a short message damning yourself to Hell, you upload it to YouTube, and then the Rational Response Squad will send you a free The God Who Wasn’t There DVD. It’s that easy…

You may damn yourself to Hell however you would like, but somewhere in your video you must say this phrase: “I deny the Holy Spirit.”

Why? Because, according to Mark 3:29 in the Holy Bible, “Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.” Jesus will forgive you for just about anything, but he won’t forgive you for denying the existence of the Holy Spirit. Ever. This is a one-way road you’re taking here.” – The Blasphemy Challenge

It’s a shame to have to ruin all their hard work by interceding:

“Father forgive them; they don’t know what they are doing.” – Luke 23:34

I’m not really going to delve much into this topic, suffice to say that I am almost certain that only believers can blaspheme the Holy Spirit, since it is a matter of the heart and not of words or deeds:

“Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!

As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified.” – Acts 5:3-5

“Judas, the one who betrayed him, realized that Jesus was doomed. Overcome with remorse, he gave back the thirty silver coins to the high priests, saying, “I’ve sinned. I’ve betrayed an innocent man.”

They said, “What do we care? That’s your problem!”

Judas threw the silver coins into the Temple and left. Then he went out and hung himself.” – Matthew 27:3-5

But I think this video posted on the counter-site, Challenge Blasphemy explains it better than I ever could in a hilarious and brilliant way. There is a hint of ‘Andy Kaufman’ comic genius in passtheaura. Look out for the salt-shaker*, points for guessing as to what this subtle Easter egg is alluding to.

*If you’re really struggling, go to the direct YouTube posting and read the comments.

[Housing Market Myths] House Prices Always Rise

Posted by Lex Fear on April 9, 2007

Some months ago I posted my intentions to blog regarding the UK housing market.

I will begin with addressing some of the myths that are commonly cited with absolutely no backing, usually by vested interests (VIs) and home owners.

The First Myth: House Prices Always Rise

This is usually the first one pulled out by those VIs who want to motivate you to stretch yourself to get on the first rung of the ladder. Statistics prove the exact opposite. Certain areas will rise and fall depending on age population, land value, attractiveness of the area and changes in infrastructure just to name a few. Below is a graph of average prices in the postcode area I currently live (edited to remove address details):

[‘Accidents’ Happen] Propaganda Still A Threat To The UK

Posted by Lex Fear on December 23, 2006

“I thought it was only the mafia that referred to killing people as “accidents”…”

Sorry, but I just couldn’t let this one go…

Met Chief’s Terror Plot Warning

I really am fed up with the kind bull that Sir Ian Blair spews. The latest article by the BBC says it all:

“Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair claims the UK is facing an unparalleled and growing threat of a terrorist attack.

However, he said there was “no specific intelligence” about an imminent attack but the threat was “ever present”.” – BBC News (cont.)

Is it just me that questions the logic of that statement? There is “no specific intelligence” but the threat is “ever present”. Does this sound a little Orwellian to you? It should. Either there must be specific intelligence, or there is no threat, you can’t just say that it’s ever present. It’s like saying there is a threat of a meteor crashing into earth- there are small bits of meteors crashing all the time. As for a large one, yes it could happen, but we don’t go around warning each other everyday or living under the cloud of the threat.

“Sir Ian also said he was “confident” of being cleared of misconduct over the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes.

And he defended an anti-terror raid in Forest Gate, claiming the shooting of a man during the raid was an accident.” (cont.)

I thought it was only the mafia that referred to killing people as “accidents”. As far as accidents go, I hope I don’t end up a police “accident” as I’m running for the tube one day (yet another reason not to use the tube).

I don’t know about you but I am just not comfortable with that term “accident”. It makes it sound like something less significant. Let’s not forget, a man lost his life here, an innocent man who happened to be of the wrong skin tone.

I’m sure if Mr De Menzes by some miracle had survived 6 shots fired into his forehead at point blank range, he would have a different take on the incident.

The commissioner criticised the length of the inquiry, adding: “It’s difficult to understand how an organisation can take 13 months to investigate what I did or did not say on one particular day.”

I must congratulate the commissioner on a clever and great example of deflecting responsibility. Why else would an organisation take 13 months to investigate what you said? There’s a PR tactic that you may have heard of, it’s call disinformation. The only reason there could be any difficulty in establishing facts is differing accounts. The delay, commissioner, is with you and the Met.

[Monkey Halfwits] Immigration Again…

Posted by Lex Fear on December 23, 2006

No sooner do I post our experience with these home-office trained, monkey half-wits does the inevitable happen:

Police killer suspect fled Britain in a veil

The irony here screams so loud I don’t need to say anything, and can I just say I am not surprised at all! If you want to know what I’m talking about read An Immigration Problem Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

[Global Alarming] Cashing In On The Environment

Posted by Lex Fear on December 10, 2006

The other night I watched an interview on Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman interviewing Stephen Timms regarding Gordon Browns green tax. Paxman was arguing about the real costs of the tax, and how some complain it doesn’t go far enough. It was discussed that the new 1.5p tax hike will make drivers drive 1 less mile per week.

Is there anyone else who finds this assumption a bit off the mark? How are car drivers going to drive 1 less mile per week? How is this going to save the environment? Wait… do you hear that crunching cement sound? It’s my flat uprooting and moving a quarter of a mile closer to work!

He then went on to talk more doublespeak about how the tax reflects the cost to the environment when people use gas.

I’m sorry but I don’t get the connection between trees dying and the government getting extra tax? What are they going to do- give money to the trees? “Sorry trees, here’s some cash compensation, by the way, we’re going to keep flying and driving cars.” Tax doesn’t solve environmental issues- cheaper alternatives do!

Gordon Browns new plan takes more money from the taxpayer, doesn’t stop carbon emissions, but it does make him a little richer, and able to keep going on spending sprees.

I have no fear in saying that I’m a car driver, an unrepentant car driver at that. As car-owners know, being a car owner makes you an enemy of the government and more recently an enemy of the environment. I have something to say to all those environMENTALISTS who are screaming for environMENTAL taxes. Gordon Brown has raised petrol by 1.5 p a litre. So what? I’ll just recoup that by buying non-energy saving light bulbs. No amount of tax will make me stop using my car- the only difference is I would be forced to cut out other things, find a better paying job and so on- everyone else would be in the same situation, the economy would change on a massive scale.

I have another secret to share with you. I hate driving, I especially hate driving in London. But its better than taking the tube:

  • I am 6 miles from work, but to get there I would have to switch tubes 3 times.
  • To take the tube daily, for which I would have to purchase 2 zones even though my home and work is in 1, it would cost me more than driving.
  • Delays and repairs. London tube already struggles with its public transport as it is. What do you think would happen if every car driver in London decided to use public transport one day? Have you thought about that? Chaos- pure chaos. Do you really think that it’s feasible? The country would grind to a stop.

It’s not that I don’t want to be more friendlier to the environment. I would take public transport if it was feasible, but the government we have does not want to help the environment, it only wants to find lucrative schemes to cover its wasteful spending. I’m being honest with you. I lived in Switzerland, I didn’t need a car there, in this country, I need a car. The government is just not prepared to invest in alternatives. Their only answer to any problem is to tax it.

The bottom line is making me pay more tax takes away my ability to afford the environmental alternatives.

[Cupid Stunts] An Immigration Problem Part 3: Invasion

Posted by Lex Fear on December 9, 2006

“And what if a crime lord, paedophile or terrorist did try to get in to the country through Heathrow? Immigration wouldn’t notice anyway- they would be too busy interrogating the MARRIED COUPLE in the corner trying to start their life together!”

Read Part 1
Read Part 2

If you read the first 2 parts, by now you are aware of my ultimate disdain for immigration officials and their complete incompetence. So far I have only verbally assaulted the British kind, but the world over they seem to be an entirely different race or breed of humans- born without the essential neural transmitters needed to understand the most basic of social nuances.

This is proved in the next example. 4 hours into our ‘visit’ with British immigration, an innocent Californian was sent over to the sin-bin. He was clearly confused, “I dunno man, I dunno why they need to interview me…” As we eavesdropped on his conversation with another poor woman stuck in Heathrow Hell, it soon became clear:

[Infallibility] Ulterior Verse of the Day: Romans 3:22-24

Posted by Lex Fear on October 1, 2006

“We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in the Pope to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.

For everyone but the Pope have sinned; fallen short of the Popes’ infallibility. Yet now the Pope in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through the ex Cathedra, on this occasion..” – Romans 3:22-24 NLT

Is an apology a sign of admission of error? Depends on whether you are the Pope and you are speaking ex cathedra or not. Today’s Ulterior Verse of the Day was inspired by an article from BBC Magazine. So is the Pope infallible, and just how infallible is he?

It seems to me that you can be both infallible and fallible dualistically, depending on how many people or religious groups you offend.

Some people may question a dichotomy such as this but I can see the benefits of such a theology. I’ve been dying to tell 18-35’s Pastor how much his preaching sucks, and now I think I’ve found a way.

[Asinine] Nuns don’t have ‘G-Spot’ – Scientists Say

Posted by Lex Fear on August 30, 2006

Canadian scientists have put to rest the theories that Nuns have a “God-spot” in their brains.

Plans are already in motion for their next big research project: Dissecting 5 AOG Ministers to test the theory that there is a ‘God or Jesus-shaped’ hole in each of our hearts.

[History Rewrite] The JFK Seminar

Posted by Lex Fear on July 15, 2006

Following the success of The Jesus Seminar, like minded theologians, historians and political analysts have decided to apply their collective wisdom to another historical event which is surrounded in controversy and doubt.

Using a simple colour-coded voting system, The learned intellectuals and academics of The Jesus Seminar found it was possible to take eye-witness accounts of historical events and simply remove most of the parts they didn’t agree with. Realising that this system of deciding what historical facts you want to agree with seemed to work, they have applied it to the event surrounding the assassination of President John F Kennedy. They hope that they can finally settle the myths and conspiracy theories once and for all.

JFK Seminarians used the same technique they applied to the events of the gospels. They worked through each sentence of the press and government reports of the event and applied the following colour-coded system to decide:

Red: The historical reliability of this information is virtually certain.
Pink: This information is probably reliable.
Gray: This information is possible but unreliable.
Black: This information is improbable, it is largely or entirely fictional.

After hours of painstaking listening and then voting (guessing) on each sentence of the report, the JFK seminar finally released their own report which they held to be more accurate than the eyewitnesses, reporters and people who were there at the time.

The following is a summary of their account of the JFK assassination:
John F Kennedy was born in Massachusetts in 1917, He served in the Navy from 1941-1945. He was a catholic. He may have been the 35th President of the United States. and is thought to have sanctioned the Bay of Pigs invasion into Cuba and later negotiated the release survivors from the invasion but it may not have been a great number. There may have been some issue or crisis over nuclear missiles and the USSR, but since we are on friendly terms with Russia in modern times, that’s probably based on personal views at the time. The Peace Corps were founded largely on the belief that Kennedy was a President. He most likely backed the civil rights movement.

In 1963 it is held in wide belief that Kennedy was assassinated, but who the assassin was is unclear and since we have not had an assassination of an American President for a very long time, it is highly unlikely this event actually happened.Since both The Jesus Seminar and The JFK Seminar are held in high esteem amongst many intelligent people and academics, it will come as no surprise that even the current American and British governments have employed their methodology for determining policies and the truth in such matters as WMD in Iraq, link between Iraq and terrorism and success overall in The War Against Terror.
