[Penalty Charges] Calls to Stop Conducting Illegal Activities are Unfair

Posted by Lex Fear on March 31, 2007

Hit with millions of claims, customer complaints, an online petition and impending OFT investigation- banks are now crying “foul play” and threatening to end free banking.

“Banks were accused of blackmail yesterday for threatening to end free banking if they were forced to reduce overdraft charges and other penalty fees.

The banks, which charge up to £39 for bounced cheques and unauthorised overdrafts, had been expected to be told to reduce the charges to around £12.” – Telegraph

Let’s forget the fact they are already operating illegally by imposing fines greater than £12- therefore sounding like a burglar who complains he’s been asked to reduce his amount of breaking and entering.

These are the companies who this year posted pre-tax profits of:

£11.5bn: HSBC
£.7.14bn: Barclays
£5.7bn: HBOS
£559.2ml: Nationwide
£585ml: Alliance & Leicester

These are the companies who insist on charging Average Joe up to £39 for even dipping into the red:

Penalised for just over £27
Penalised for delay in clearing customers cheques – wait a minute, who delays the cheques in the first place?
Penalised for unforseen circumstances

Well, perhaps if you make a mistake, even if it is accidental, unforseen or just business, you deserve to be charged right?

So I look forward to seeing what kind of charges are levied on these errors:

Oops! Delay in receiving monthly salary
Oops! Sent details to wrong address

Quid es equitas?

[Jokes] Love and Marriage

Posted by Lex Fear on March 31, 2007

My better half forwarded these to me this morning:

Its funny when people discuss over “love marriage” and “arranged marriage”
It is like asking a person if he would like to “hang himself” or “shoot himself”.

————————————————————–
Every man should get married some time; after all, happiness is not the only thing in life!!

————————————————————–
Don’t marry for money; you can borrow it cheaper. –Scottish Proverb

————————————————————–
A psychiatrist is a person who will give you expensive answers that your wife will give you for free.

————————————————————–
Bachelors know more about women than married men; if they didn’t, they’d
be married too.

————————————————————–
– Marriage is a three-ring circus:
–engagement ring
—wedding ring
—suffering

————————————————————–
When a newly married couple smiles, everyone knows why. When a ten-year married couple smiles, everyone wonders why.

————————————————————–
Love is blind but marriage is an eye-opener.

————————————————————–
We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.

[Anti-Terrorists] It Was Only A Matter Of Time…

[Bwankers] Account-ability Advice for Banks

Posted by Lex Fear on March 28, 2007

Most blogs we’re so busy discussing the budget last week they missed the BBC’s undercover whistleblower program exposing underhand standard business practices by Barclays Bank. (Barclays was the focus, just like McDonalds was with fast food. And just like Burger King to McDonalds, you can bank on the rest of the industry using the same business ethic).

“A nine-month investigation by BBC reporters working undercover in a leading British bank has revealed a culture of ruthlessness and lies which will shock their customers.” – BBC Whistleblower

Undercover reporter Amanda Egbujo went undercover as an employee of Barclays for 9 months. In that time she witnessed common practices such as:

  • Treating customers with contempt (particularly those who struggled paying/complained about unlawful charges)
  • Lying – illegally claiming to be Account Consultants rather than Sales Monkeys
  • Moving money from accounts – without authority – to gain commission
  • Adding financial products to customer accounts without knowledge- for a monthly charge
  • Refusing customers products they require, but then offering a financial product they do not need.
  • Staff employed with no criminal background checks
  • Fraud accounts set up with relative ease

I asserted this was not just Barclays, and I have my own experience with HSBC, when they decided to cancel my Graduate 0% Interest Overdraft (which stood over £1000), then reinstate the overdraft a year later at a standard 15% interest. This case is currently with the small claims court.

Indeed this week Halifax had to issue an apology for stolen mortgage details. Unlike average joe who has £20-£35 penalties automatically deducted at the end of the month for going over agreed limits, Halifax is given plenty of time to get their act together by the FSA.

I’ve said this before, it’s not legal, it’s not business, it’s immoral and indefensible.

As a Christian, I believe that these corrupt financial institutions will one day have to answer to God:

“If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has collapsed under its load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and help. In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.” – Exodus 23:5-6

“But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve. Like a partridge that hatches eggs she has not laid, so are those who get their wealth by unjust means. At midlife they will lose their riches; in the end, they will become poor old fools.” – Jeremiah 17:10-11

“How you hate honest judges! How you despise people who tell the truth! You trample the poor, stealing their grain through taxes and unfair rent. Therefore, though you build beautiful stone houses, you will never live in them. Though you plant lush vineyards, you will never drink wine from them. For I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions. You oppress good people by taking bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.” – Amos 5:10-12

[EnvironMENTALIST] Miliblog: 2 Questions

Posted by Lex Fear on March 27, 2007

Much debate has taken place over EnvironMENTAL, Food and Affairs Secretary David Milibands blog. Rumours abound at the cost of his blog to the tax-payer.

Guido first posted with a figure of £8,150 (but estimated the real cost to be nearer £50,000). One MP, Tom Watson dismissed that as nonsense and offered figures of £6,000 for setup and £4,500 to maintain annually. Guido came back with an annual wage of £62,400 for Milibands blog assistant.

Finally Miliband posted actual costs on the blog:
Initial Setup £6,000
Change over to DEFRA £1,250
Ongoing Technical costs £900 p.a.
Blog assistant £3,600 p.a. (£300 / 10 hours per month)

What no-one seems to be asking is:

A) Why tax-payers are paying ANY money towards a personal blog, especially when 11.2 million UK households (44%) are not online.

B) If one of the opposition parties gain power at the next election, no doubt the EnvironMENTAL secretary will be replaced- does this mean the blog will be forfeited to the new secretary? If it belongs to the tax-payer it should (yet another £6k for name change, no doubt).

Burning Our Money has sourced a graph showing the near parallel affect of sunspots on global warmth (or coolness depending on which decade or century you were born in).

Here’s an interesting video:

[Profiteering] Road Safety Statistics

Posted by Lex Fear on March 27, 2007

icWales 23 March 2007 – 13 Year Backlog to Repair Poor Welsh Roads.

“The maintenance backlog for local authority roads in Wales is estimated to take 12.9 years and each county council here has a maintenance budget shortfall of £4.1m.”

icWales 22 March 2007 – North-South Devide for Speed Camera Cash

“The Treasury will provide a fixed grant to each camera partnership, with Wales’ money, totalling £8.5m, channelled through the Welsh Assembly Government.”

DriveTime 24 March 2007 – Poor Maintenance Threatens Road Safety

English authorities receive just 40% of the budget they need to spend on local roads.
Welsh authorities fare even worse, receiving only 28% of the budget they require – just £1 per metre a year is spent on roads in Wales in comparison to £2 in the rest of England and six in London.

[Bwankers] More Banks Behaving Badly

Posted by Lex Fear on March 25, 2007

Royal Bank of Scotland has threatened 14,000 employees with disciplinary action if they do not open an account with the RBS Group.

Not that this threat would survive an employment tribunal, but how would RBS be affected if 14,000 employees we’re laid off, or walked out tomorrow? Idle threats should be tested to shame those that make them.

On the subject of bank robbers, I have some good news to share with you later when I have time- I shall be showing you a scan of a certain letter which demonstrates justice served.

[Pharisees] Hypocracy Is Still Hypocracy

Posted by Lex Fear on March 25, 2007

Disclaimer: I’m all for anyone resisting state interference and attempts to capture our data, this post is about religiosity.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I find the faith of the Mennonites to be fraud. Yes, they may seem eccentric and are not doing any harm to anyone, but what example are they setting to the world?

MSNBC reports that Missouri Mennonites are planning to move out of the state because a new law forces them to have a photo ID on their driving licenses:

“The Mennonites, a plain-living sect whose members are similar to the Amish, but usually more worldly, say the 2004 law conflicts with the Biblical prohibition against the making of ‘graven images’. – MSNBC, Mennonites plan to move over Photo ID’s

Last time I checked, a graven image was an image or object made specifically for worship, but how many people do you know worship their own photo ID on their passport? Most people I know are practically embarrassed of their photo ID and try to keep it hidden- not exactly an image of worship is it?

But there’s something more that bothers me about the Mennonites, Amish (though I have great respect for the Amish in their demonstration of their faith) and all other similar followings- and that’s the association of their Christian faith with the following of religious rituals. Something that Christ himself came to free us from.

I have no problem with alternative lifestyles, or the communities in themselves, but when you begin to use scripture to justify this type of lifestyle. To me it’s old covenant, and it is betraying Jesus’s message which was to go into all the world and preach the gospel- not form communities and shun the world.

What’s they are tying a noose around their own neck. If you are going to follow rules, one of those rules is not to lead others into breaking them. Why then are photographs not righteous enough for the Mennonites, but ok for those around them- are they not simply getting someone else to do their dirty work?

“Kropf said he is looking to sell his store. He said if he cannot find a buyer, he will stay in Missouri but rely on someone else to bring in his supplies, because he will not be able to hold a driver’s license without agreeing to a photo.”

“And in Pennsylvania, a state law requiring photo identification to purchase guns has prompted many Amish who hunt to hire non-Amish neighbors to buy guns for them, according to Kraybill.”

So is it a sin, or not a sin? Is it a religious requirement, or not? It seems even those who have shunned the modern world, still rely on it for certain necessary evils.

[Asinine] The Dog Vinci Code

Posted by Lex Fear on March 25, 2007

If Da Vinci was trying to drop the marriage bomb on us, what is this artist trying to say?

I’m no historian, but it looks like the one on the right of Jesus is not a disciple but in fact…. a dog!
